On most weekends the busy roads around Hoan Kiem Lake fall quiet. Motorbikes are turned away, and the space fills with families, groups of friends and visitors strolling around the water. The Hoan Kiem walking street, which locals usually call phố đi bộ Hồ Gươm, is an easy, relaxed way to spend an evening in Hanoi: it is free, it needs no planning beyond checking the schedule, and it shows you how the city spends its evenings off.
Why the Hoan Kiem walking street matters
Hoan Kiem Lake sits at the centre of old Hanoi, and on weekdays the streets around it carry heavy traffic. In 2016 the city began a trial that closed these streets to vehicles at weekends, to give residents and visitors a public space and to showcase Vietnamese culture. After about three years of trials, the weekend closure became permanent from the start of 2020.
The idea has since spread. On the same evenings, several streets of the Old Quarter also become walking streets, with a night market and a street-food area, so you can walk from the lake north into the trade streets without dodging traffic. The city has also talked about adding more walking areas in other districts.
What you will see
There is no stage or ticket gate. The zone is simply the lakeside and the streets around it, handed over to people on foot. The table at the top of this guide lists the main streets.
- The lake itself. Without traffic noise you can walk the full loop around the water, look across to the red Huc Bridge and Ngoc Son Temple, and stop on the benches under the trees.
- People enjoying the space. Expect children playing in the open roads, friends taking photos and small groups gathered around games. Around the anniversary of the capital’s liberation in October 2026, for example, the lakeside hosted chess games, an art installation of mirrors and a cầu mây (kick volleyball) match.
- Organised events. Cultural events, exhibitions and festivals are held at some weekends, especially around public holidays. What is on changes from week to week.
- The night market route. The Old Quarter walking streets run north from the lake through Hàng Đào towards Đồng Xuân Market, with night-market stalls and street food along the way.
Local tip The walking zone is a good time to see the lake at night. Start on the northern shore, walk one full loop, then drift into the Old Quarter for a late snack.
Rules to follow
The walking zone has its own set of rules, issued by the Hanoi People’s Committee in 2022. The main points for visitors are in the table above. In short: leave vehicles outside the zone, do not bring pets, keep loud music to yourself, put rubbish in the bins, keep off the grass and dress respectfully.
Street hawking and pestering tourists are not allowed inside the zone. Licensed stalls are expected to display their prices, so it is fair to check the price before you buy.
When to go
The walking street runs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, and around the lake it usually continues through the weekend days too. Check the table for the regular schedule.
Plan with some flexibility. The schedule is often changed: it has been extended for long holidays such as National Day, adjusted for major events and suspended altogether, for example over the Tết holiday in 2023 and during the 2026 elections. Notices from the local authorities often come out only shortly before the change, so check the local news for the week of your visit.
Evenings are the liveliest time. Saturday nights and holiday evenings can be very crowded, so keep your phone and bag close and agree a meeting point if you are in a group.
Getting there
If you are staying in the Old Quarter, you can simply walk to the lake. From further away, take a taxi or ride-hailing car and ask to be dropped at the edge of the zone, since vehicles cannot enter while it is open. If you come by motorbike, use a supervised parking area outside the closed streets.
Combining it with nearby sights
The walking street pairs naturally with a visit to Ngoc Son Temple on the lake, and with a wander through the Old Quarter. If you want to sit down, the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre beside the lake and the cafés nearby make easy stops between walks.
