A Perfume Pagoda day trip combines three very Vietnamese experiences: a slow ride in a rowing boat between limestone hills, a climb to a hillside pagoda, and a visit to an ancient cave that pilgrims regard as sacred. Chùa Hương, as it is known in Vietnamese, lies in the Hương Sơn area of outer Hanoi, and it makes a long but rewarding day out from the city.
Why go
The Perfume Pagoda is not a single building but a whole landscape of pagodas, temples and shrines spread across several routes in the hills. It is ranked as a special national heritage site, and Hanoi has recognised Hương Sơn as a city-level tourist area. The city has said it hopes to have the area recognised as a national tourist area and to prepare a UNESCO nomination in the coming years.
For visitors, the appeal is the journey as much as the destination. The official tourism website describes drifting along the Yến stream past limestone karsts and rice fields, before a walk up stone steps to the pagodas. At the end is Hương Tích cave, where shrines sit in the mouth of the cave among stalagmites, and where pilgrims come to pray for the year ahead.
Getting there
The table near the top of this guide gives the distance and journey time from Hanoi. Most independent travellers choose one of these:
- An organised tour. The simplest option: transport, tickets and often a guide are arranged for you. Ask whether the boat ticket and the cable car are included, as these are priced separately.
- A private car or taxi. Gives you control over timing, which helps if you want to arrive before the tour groups. Agree the return trip in advance, as the site is far from the city.
We have not found official public-transport information for this route that we can recommend, so we do not suggest relying on buses for a same-day return.
Older guides place the pagoda in Mỹ Đức district. Since Hanoi’s 2025 local government changes, the area is administered as Hương Sơn commune.
What to see
- The Yến stream. From the pier, rowing boats carry visitors along the stream between the hills. Most boats are rowed by hand, and life jackets are provided; wear yours for the whole ride. During the festival, electric cars run between the car parks and the boat pier.
- Thiên Trù pagoda. The pilgrimage continues on foot up stone steps to Thiên Trù, which is also where the cable car to Hương Tích starts.
- The climb to Hương Tích cave. From Thiên Trù you can walk up the mountain path or take the cable car. If you have mobility concerns or limited time, the cable car saves you the climb.
- Hương Tích cave. The spiritual heart of the complex, with altars set among the rock formations near the cave entrance.
- Other routes. The complex has several more routes with pagodas and temples, including the Long Vân – Tuyết Sơn route, which has its own ticket.
Timing and how long to stay
Allow a full day, including the journey from Hanoi, the boat ride and the climb.
The pagoda’s festival season starts after Lunar New Year and runs into spring. It is the most atmospheric time to go, but also by far the busiest: organisers prepared for tens of thousands of visitors a day at the peak in 2026. Tickets are now electronic and checked by QR code, so buy them in advance where possible. The dates for the current season are in the table above; the organisers announce new dates each year.
Outside the festival, the official tourism website notes that you can visit at any time of year. Expect a calmer site, but check in advance that boats and the cable car are running on the day you plan to go.
Local tip Wear comfortable shoes with good grip for the stone steps, the mountain path and the cave.
Is it worth it, and alternatives
The trip is worth it if you are interested in Vietnamese Buddhism and pilgrimage, or simply want a day of river and mountain scenery away from the city traffic. It is less suited to travellers who dislike crowds during festival season, or who have only one or two days in Hanoi.
If you want a shorter outing, the pottery village of Bát Tràng is much closer to the city. If boats through limestone landscapes are your main interest, compare this trip with a day in Ninh Bình.
Visiting respectfully
The pagodas and the cave are active places of worship. Dress modestly, keep your voice down near altars, and follow any instructions from staff about where photos are not allowed. Take your rubbish back with you; the stream and the cave are part of what makes the place special.
